Google Stops Support for Three Thermostats – Should You Keep Your Nest Thermostat?

Posted: October 1, 2025

Google ends Nest Thermostat support for three models as of October 25, 2025

If youโ€™ve heard of smart homes, youโ€™ve likely heard of Google Nest Thermostats! They first launched fourteen years ago and revolutionized the idea of smart homes, making them possible for the average homeowner like you and me. With the release of the newest Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), Google has announced theyโ€™re ending support for three models of the Google Nest Learning Thermostat.

Starting October 25th, 2025, the Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011), Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012), and Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2014, European version) will no longer be supported.

Thankfully, this news comes with Google providing eligible users with a special offer for the newest fourth generation Nest Learning Thermostat.

What does this mean for you?

If you have one of the affected devices, you willโ€”unfortunatelyโ€”notice changes to your routine and the way you interact with your thermostat once Google cancels support for the Nest Learning Thermostat on October 25th, 2025. The biggest adjustment will be when you realize your thermostats arenโ€™t in your Nest or Home app anymoreโ€ฆbecause they will automatically be unpaired and removed from those apps!

Furthermore, youโ€™ll have to make additional adjustments if connected third-party assistants and features like Home/Away Assist are an integral part of your regular schedule. This includes Nest Protects, meaning the emergency shut off will no longer run. If you currently rely heavily on these features, it may be time to consider alternatives.

If accommodating to a new schedule or routine is not for you, you may consider purchasing the newest Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), because Google will give eligible Canadian users an offer for the latest generation Nest Learning Thermostat at nearly 50% off ($160 CAD off MSRP!).

Plus, to make the transition easier for you (and a little sweeter), for a limited time, ProSolutions will offer a special installation package for just $250, so your smart home will stay smartโ€”without hiccups!

If you choose not to upgrade, thatโ€™s totally fine too. While youโ€™ll lose most functions, others will remain, so your affected thermostats will continue working until youโ€™re ready for something new. However, you should prepare for further limited function and inconvenience once Google ends support for the thermostats. Unfortunately, because we wonโ€™t know what will and wonโ€™t work as updates end, you will want to keep your eye on your thermostats.

What devices are affected?

Google will be cancelling support for the Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011), Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012), and Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2014, European version) on October 25th, 2025. However, this doesnโ€™t mean Google cancelled the Nest thermostat entirely, or that the Google Nest is obsolete!

If you have another Nest thermostat model (NOT the Nest Learning Thermostat first or second generation), they are unaffected and will continue to receive software and security updates. You will continue seeing these thermostats in your Home or Nest app.

What exactly will happen come October 25th, 2025?

Starting October 25th, 2025, you wonโ€™t be able to do things the way you usually do. This includes checking the thermostat status from within the Nest or Home app on your mobile device, remotely controlling the device, receiving notifications, and changing settings. Basically, you wonโ€™t be able to manage your thermostats from your phone or tablet because they will automatically be disconnected from your Nest or Home apps.

If you use features like Home/Away Assist, Google Assistant controls wonโ€™t work anymore.

You may experience further loss of functions the longer you keep your Nest Learning Thermostat (1st and 2nd gen) after Google ends support.

What CAN I do with my affected thermostat after October 25th, 2025, then?

While loss of use and changing your routine may be annoying, your Nest Learning Thermostat (1st and 2nd gen) will absolutely continue to work and be usable after 2025!

You will still be able to do things directly on the device (even though the thermostat will be missing in the Nest or Home app), such as control your Nest, continue relying on your pre-set schedules, adjust schedules, and switch temperature modes.

All other features and settings on the thermostat itself will still be accessible, but once it stops receiving software and security updates, their functionality will eventually become further limited.

Interested in other suggestions or just want to chat with someone about the changes? Feel free to contact us! Weโ€™d be happy to help answer any questions you may have.

What model is my Nest Thermostat? How do I tell which generation I own?

Google Nest Thermostats sport a sleek look that is immediately recognizableโ€”but may prove difficult to discern which model or generation you have. Check Googleโ€™s guide to help figure out which device you have.

Whatโ€™s this I hear about Googleโ€™s special offer for Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)?

If you are an eligible user, Google will contact you via email to send you an offer for a discounted Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) for each affected thermostat in your home, purchasable through their specific link.ย

Google will determine the number of unique promo links you receive depending on the number of impacted devices per home. If you are eligible and need more than 3 fourth generation Nest Learning Thermostats (4th gen), Google asks you to reach out to Google Support.

How do I install the fourth generation Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)?

We know change can be inconvenient, so weโ€™re here to help! Once youโ€™ve received your new 4th generation Nest Learning Thermostat from Google, you can contact us, and ProSolutions will offer a special full installation service deal to help make the process as smooth as possible.

We will come and remove your current thermostat, install your new 4th generation Nest Learning Thermostat, help you set it up, and walk you through the whole upgrade all for just $250.

Should I keep my Nest Thermostat or should I upgrade?

At the end of the day, this decision is entirely up to you. While there are many benefits to the newest generation Nest Learning Thermostat, it does come with costsโ€”even with Googleโ€™s discount and our installation promotion.

If you keep your current thermostats, remember you will have to adjust the way you manage your smart-home experience, especially as functionality declines once support ends.

Whichever you decide, remember that you can always contact us with any questions you may have!
