Helping Make Protecting Your Home Easier

The City of Edmonton is making protecting your home easier with a Backwater Valve Subsidy Program for those that are eligible. Backflow prevention is vital in keeping your basement dry during heavy storms, so this is definitely something you’ll want to pay attention to.

A backflow valve is a valve that is placed into the main line that carries water from your home. In the event that the direction of the water gets reversed – from a severe storm – the valve shuts off access and prevents that water from entering your home.

If you don’t have a backflow valve, when the water reverses, it will back up into your drains and could even possibly overflow toilets, showers, and tubs.

As you can see, having one of these devices installed in your home is a necessity, and that’s why ProSolutions and the city of Edmonton wants to help.

There are two type of Subsidy Programs being offered through the city: The Regular Backwater Valve Subsidy Program and The Proactive Backwater Valve Subsidy Program.

Regular Subsidy Program

Even though this program has been around since 1991, you may never have heard of it – and that’s okay! The important thing is that, going forward, you know what resources you have available to you so that you can protect your home as best as possible. This program applies when a homeowner has experienced basement sewer backup during a storm.

To be eligible:

  1. You must live in a single family home or separately serviced duplex dwelling.
  2. The home would have had to be built prior to 1989.
  3. The sanitary sewer backup had to have occurred in a sanitary main line following a major storm event.
  4. The home must be serviced directly from the city’s sewer system.
  5. You must not have used this subsidy in the past for the same location.

Proactive Subsidy Program

This is another great program, as it protects home and families who have not yet experienced a sanitary sewer backup. It applies when there is funding available from the Regular program. The homeowner has to submit a request with the location and flooding history to Edmonton’s Drainage Services.

To be eligible:

  1. You must live in a single family home or separately serviced duplex dwelling.
  2. The home would have had to be built before 1989.
  3. The home has to be serviced directly from the city’s sewer system.
  4. You must not have used this subsidy in the past for the same location.

Following your eligibility, you will be able to have a backwater valve installed at a low cost to you. For more information, visit the City of Edmonton’s website, or call ProSolutions for more information. If you know you already qualify, call ProSolutions today to set up an installation!
